What Is Montagem? The Brazilian Funk and Phonk Trend Explained

If you have spent any time scrolling through TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts recently, you have likely run into a high-energy, bass-heavy audio track that hits with cinematic intensity. Often labeled with titles starting with “MTG” or “Montagem” followed by a stylized name, these tracks have taken over the internet.

Rather than referring to a single individual artist, “montagem” (Portuguese for “montage” or “assembly”) is a dynamic, fast-evolving subgenre and production technique rooted in Brazilian Funk (Funk Carioca) and closely related to the global Phonk movement.

What is a Montagem?

At its core, a montagem is a sonic collage. The term itself has deep roots in Brazilian music history, traditionally describing a track where a producer stitches together samples from existing songs, famous vocal snippets, and heavy drum loops.

Modern montagem takes that classic idea and pushes it to hyper-drive:

  • BPM Overdrive: While traditional funk sits at a steady groove, montagem tracks frequently blast past 150 BPM, fusing the raw energy of baile funk with techno and hardstyle elements.
  • Aggressive Sound Design: Think blown-out, distorted 808 basslines, metallic industrial clangs, laser sound effects, and sharp synth stabs.
  • Sampled Nostalgia & Horror: A trademark of the genre is the use of hyper-pitched, creepy, or nostalgic vocal chops—ranging from chopped-up dialogue samples of classic American horror movies to vintage anime clips and compressed internet memes.

The Origins: From Favelas to Bedroom Producers

While the term has older roots in Rio de Janeiro’s 1990s funk scene, today’s global montagem wave is largely driven by a decentralized network of young bedroom producers—primarily across Brazil (such as São Paulo and Rio)—working on basic software like FL Studio.

Freed from the restrictions of commercial radio, these underground artists began experimenting with extreme equalization and rapid-fire sequencing. They uploaded their tracks directly to platforms like SoundCloud, YouTube, and TikTok, using the tag “Montagem” to signal a patchwork track built for maximum impact. Over time, international producers blended these patterns with Phonk, giving birth to a cross-continental style often searched simply as “Brazilian Phonk”.

Why Montagem Conquered Social Media

Montagem music didn’t scale through traditional radio play or major record labels; it conquered the world because it is custom-made for the algorithm of short-form video.

  • Instant Adrenaline: Tracks usually drop straight into high-intensity drops without long, boring build-ups.
  • The “Main Character” Vibe: The dark, theatrical energy makes it the ultimate soundtrack for gym transformations, skateboard clips, gaming highlights, and edgy fashion edits.
  • Viral Interconnectivity: Producers frequently sample trending internet audios, creating a feedback loop where viral culture feeds the music, and the music supercharges the viral culture.

As artists like DJ FKU, DJ Topo, and countless underground creators continue to push boundaries, montagem has evolved from a localized regional style into a borderless digital phenomenon.
